Aldrich Road Parking Poses Problem for Repaving Project

Residents of apartments on the small street between Galen and Watertown streets park on asphalt where the sidewalk should be.

Aldrich Road, an L-shaped street linking Galen Street to Watertown Street, made the , but the little road may prove to be a tricky one.

The street gets a lot of traffic because it serves as a cut through, for people trying to avoid Watertown Square, said Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee.

A number of apartments and condos line the street, too, and the residents park on the sidewalk, which is against town bylaws, Town Councilor Vincent Piccirilli said at a Public Works Committee meeting on April 3.

“It’s difficult from a zoning perspective considering all the apartments there with front yard parking,” Piccirilli said. “They (park) essentially on what should be sidewalk.”

The sidewalk, however is about the same level as the street, and the asphalt stretches from the front of one apartment building on to the front of the building across the street.

Town Councilor Cecilia Lenk said someone from the town should talk with Aldrich Road property owners before making a decision.

“For those apartment buildings, that is the only parking,” Lenk said. “But people should not be parking on the sidewalk.”

Economic Development and Planning Director Steve Magoon said he would look at the zoning for the street to see where the property line lies.
