Watertown Patch readers cast their vote and their message was clear - the best sandwich in Watertown comes from Maximo's Takeout.
The eatery at 584 Mt. Auburn St. in Coolidge Square took 66 percent of the 208 votes in the inaugural Best of Watertown contest. The restaurant will have bragging rights and will receive a certificate from Patch.
Phillip Zeller, the proprietor of Maximo's, said his business has built up a big fan base in the six months it has been open.
"I think we are offing an alternative, right now, to what other take out places are doing. We have a lot of grilled items and salads," Zeller said. "We don't label ourselves as healthy, but we have a lot of healthy items."
Some of the frequent requests by Maximo's customers are the Slammin' BLT (with cheddar cheese and an egg added to the sandwich) and the Mediterranean turkey burger.
Zeller customers were buzzing about the "Best of" contest.
"A lot of people came in, and they were excited about it," Zeller said. "We were telling people about it."
Maximo's also benefitted from a recent write-up in the Boston Phoenix, Zeller said.
Maximo's wasn't the only place to get some love in the Best Sandwich in Watertown poll. Emilio's got the second most votes, with 10 percent, closely followed by Matilda's and Strip T's - 7 percent each. Fordee's also garnered some votes.
Check back Monday for the next poll, the best preschool/day care in Watertown. Voting begins at 5 a.m. Monday.
