The Miracle of Pregnancy

Surviving pregnancy and coming out sane on the other side requires a bit of fun now and then, and saying thank you to my miraculous baby-making bod.

As my pregnancy progresses, and I enter the second trimester, I thought there was no better time to let my body know how thankful I am for all of its hard work. Even though this is my second pregnancy, the mind plays tricks on us mamas, causing us to forget many of the trying, gunky parts of pregnancy. It is not until we are smack-dab in the middle of it again, that we remember how physical it all is.

This might seem obvious; of course the process is physical. Our bodies are growing a human being from particles of microscopic dust to kicking and screaming bundles of joy. But just how much it takes to grow a baby isn't really mentioned much in the headlines.

What we hear about is so-and-so celebrity and how much weight she lost three minutes after the birth of her perfect baby in her private hospital suite overlooking the Seine. Weight gain (and its subsequent post-natal loss) are primary in the minds of many when it comes to pregnancy. Of course the expanding belly is the easiest to spot, but in reality, what is going on inside the mama-to-be encompasses her whole body. The lights are on 24/7 in the factory literally from head to toe.

So from the bottom of my heartburn, to the top of my foggy brain, I wish to pay homage to my miraculous, baby-making bod. And as the months progress, I know I may be short of breath, have slow digestion, vision changes, swollen feet, dark patches on my skin and the loose ligaments of a circus performer, but honestly, I know these symptoms are only the side effects of the architecture of a little person.

How can I complain about a little hip pain when you are building my baby's heart? What's the harm in a little crying now and then? Throwing a few fits here are there during a mood swing? You are the one doing the hard work.

Thank you for going along on this great science experiment with me. I promise to bask in my pregnancy glow and temporarily thickening hair as I do my best to keep up with cravings, get some exercise, and floss my sensitive gums. Just keep trucking along.

You are doing a tremendous job and I truly, truly thank you.
