Watertown Woman Killed by Train in South Attleboro

The woman was struck by an Amtrak train on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman struck and killed by an Amtrak train Wednesday afternoon in South Attleboro was 26-year-old Laura Kibuuka of Watertown. MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo released the information on her identity Friday afternoon.

Kibuuka was struck by an Acela Express train near the station at 1315 Newport Ave., which can reach up to 150 mph. Pesaturo said Wednesday that it was unclear why she was on the track. He said Friday that the incident remains under investigation by the MBTA Transit Police.

There were 197 passengers aboard the train, which was traveling from Washington D.C. to Boston. No passengers or crew members were injured.

Kibuuka, of Watertown, Mass., originally hailed from Mengo, Uganda, where she was inspired to pursue medicine “in part from her experience in Africa with the AIDS epidemic,” Paxson wrote. Kibuuka, who graduated with a degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 2009, also had a history of community service.
Kibuuka taught English as a Second Language to adults in Watertown and served as a mathematics teaching assistant for rising first-years at the University of Massachusetts, Paxson wrote. Kibuuka also interned with the biotechnology company Genzyme as an undergraduate and worked at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital as a research technician.

The number that sticks out is Amtrak employee injuries. Is it?
A. Amtrak employees milk it? OR
B. The other railroads hide employee injuries.

Good Lord GB.. the girl was on a railroad track for some unexplained reason. Speaking English isn't the issue. They have railroad tracks all over the world. People know trains travel on the tracks and can't stop on a dime.
This is tragedy that shouldn't be exploited to promote any other agenda. Who knows what she was thinking. The poor girl is dead. She has family.
I know you and it's not your intent to be hurtful. But that's clearly an insensitive remark.
We both agree that immigrants should learn English. But for Pete's sake this isn't the time to bring this up, especially since knowing the language isn't germane to her demise. Any sapient person doesn't need to read a warning a sign to know that trains travel on tracks and it's dangerous to walk there. I'm not implying the girl was not smart. Obviously she was unfortunately careless or for some other reason put herself in danger.

She was a Brown Medical student who spoke English better than half of these Americans and she was brilliant at that...So if you people do not have anything nice to say please abstain from saying anything at all.....especially if you do not know her. This was not particularly directed to you John

SS,,, it shouldn't remotely be directed at me. All I said was she placed herself in danger for some unknown reason. Lord only knows why. This is tragedy and no time to be discussing the language she spoke.

That said, No one has mentioned women's rights or guns in this conversation. But Mr. Cavaretta is another that can't resist bringing other things in to this conversation. Seems to me that he is the one with an agenda to spread.

This is tragic event period. We should be praying for the girl and her family.

I see and what exactly have I said about immigrants? I'm the son of an immigrant.
And where have I attacked women's rights? Oh excuse me, defending the right of the unborn being slaughtered daily is considered a woman's right.
Finally, I'm not against "reasonable" legislation to control gun violence.
We ought to start by enforcing the laws we have.

Joel, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to you and your entire family. Laura will always be remembered. She was an exceptional classmate, coworker, friend, family member, care taker, and everything she took on she did an amazing job at. She always put her all into everything and I couldn’t have asked for a more caring and loving friend. I went to highschool and college with Laura and I miss her terribly. Rest in heavenly peace Laura, may you live on in the hearts of those you touched.
