Experiential Learning Thrives at Hosmer Elementary School

This year Hosmer Elementary School PTO strove to bring the curriculum to life through experiences that complement classroom studies. Here’s a highlight from each grade.

 

Kindergarten: Dinosaur fossil dig with the Science Discovery Museum (SDM) of Acton.

1st Grade: 1) Weather science with the SDM; 2) local history/preservation at the Jackson Homestead Museum in Newton.

2nd Grade: 1) Trip to the SDM to explore sound, meteorology, music, green building, and nano technology; 2) special East Asian culture program with a scholar of Japanese studies.

3rd Grade: 1) Minute Man National Park presentation on Revolutionary War history; 2) storytelling by British Redcoat re-enactors; 3) walking tours with the Watertown Historical Society.

4th Grade: 1) Owl show from the SDM, wherein an ornithologist taught the children about the owls’ characteristics, habitats, and behaviors; 2) SDM geology practicum in rocks and minerals; 3) SDM meteorology and climatology lesson.

5th Grade: 1) Expedition to Adams National Historical Park; 2) music performance at the House of Blues.
