PAID Northeastern Listening Study for Adults!

At Northeastern University’s Communication Analysis and Design Laboratory we are conducting a new listening study involving the understandability of speech in individuals with motor speech impairments. Our goal is to understand how the type of speech produced affects understandability. These findings will help us to learn about motor speech disorders and possibly help to develop methods to improve speech understandability.

We are looking for participants that are 18 years of age or older, speak English as their primary language, and have no speech, language, cognitive, or hearing impairments. The study consists of one session approximately one-hour in length and takes place in our Lab’s new Sound-Isolated Booth. The study begins with a hearing screening to make sure your hearing is sufficient to complete the experiment. If the hearing screening is passed, you will be sat in front of a computer screen with a set of headphones. A simple computer program will lead you through a listening experiment. You will listen to words and sentences produced by individuals with motor speech impairments. You will be asked to type what you hear and rate on a scale how confident you are in what you heard. Breaks will be provided at any point throughout the experiment at your request, if you begin to feel tired.  At the end of the session, you will be compensated with $20.00 cash as appreciation for your time. We are also able to provide free parking next to our Lab.
