Ball Used in Jackie Robinson's Debut Resided in Watertown for Years

A ball from Jackie Robinson’s first game in the major leagues has been in Watertown for decades, and now it’s being sold at auction.

Richard Flaherty has the ball, after finding it in a box in his father’s Watertown home. It originally belonged Artie Gore, Flaherty’s uncle, who was an umpire. It was given to him by his fellow umpires because that day – April 15, 1947 - was Gore’s debut, too, according to an Associated Press story in the Boston Globe.

On Tuesday, July 16, the ball will be auctioned at the All Star Game Fan Fest, hosted by the New York Mets. Online bidding already started and as of Monday it was over $21,000.
