To The Test: Perkins Touches Up New US Currency

Staff and library patrons tested new paper currency with various raised tactile features.

More than 40 Perkins staff and Library patrons volunteered to test sample tactile currency at Perkins Library on July 18-19, 2013.

Representatives from the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) engaged volunteers who are blind and range in age from 15 to 65 to test samples of paper currency with various raised tactile features to determine which are best detected by touch.

The volunteers from more than 20 towns in Greater Boston gave feedback on the ease of detection of the raised symbols and speed with which denominations could be distinguished.
