A Black Comedy Explores Torture and Homeland Security

Titanic Theatre brings "Torture is Wrong, and the People who Love Them" to the stage in Watertown.

Torture and comedy rarely mix, but the Titanic Theatre Company does just that in its new production at the Arsenal Center for the Art’s Black Box Theater.

In “Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them” playwright Christopher Durang takes a satirical look at America’s homeland security.

“Durang both reveals and relieves our fears in this black comedy for an era of yellow, orange and red alerts,” according to the Titanic Theatre website.

The play begins with Felicity waking up to find she has married a man named Zamir after a night of drinking, and she brings him home to meet the parents, according to a piece in the Boston Globe. That’s when the craziness really begins, including taking steps that the government won’t to find out what the real deal is with the guy that Felicity married.

Follinwing closely after the terrorist attack in Boston, which spread to Watertown, the play is very topical, director Adam Zahler told the Globe.

“The political climate continues to be very, very charged and the play certainly has some fun with that,” Zahler said. “It’s a very, very current play and it’s a very, very American play.”
