Bites Nearby: Hannaford's Supermarket

This large supermarket has a deli in it with hot soups, roasted and fried chicken, ribs, salads, and make-your-own stir-fry.

Whole Foods Market isn't the only local supermarket chain that offers a deli and other hot, prepared foods in store. Although there's no sitting area in Hannaford, it's still hard to beat doing your food shopping and also getting a container of homemade soup, four-pack of fried chicken, half-rack of ribs, turkey breast or salad bar plate at the same time.

What to eat: The soups are fresh and hearty, with three staples: chicken noodle, clam chowder, and chili, and seasonal ones, like broccoli romano. The rotisserie and fried chicken and barbecue ribs are also regular fare. Or you can make your own stir fry, with noodles or rice, a selection of vegetables and a protein (chicken, shrimp, or tofu) and they'll cook it up for you.

The vibe: Prompt service in a busy, well-run supermarket.

Cool factor no. 1: Surrounding the deli are other departments offering other quick bites: the bakery, cheese section, fresh produce (how about a Honey Crisp apple?) and an olive bar.

Cool factor no. 2: It's hard to argue with saving time by doing food shopping and picking up a quick lunch or dinner in one trip.

Cool factor no. 3: This is an "uncool" factor: the sandwiches are not made on-site and the staff thinks they're not as good as the in-store fare.

Ironic timing with their recent beef recall, but Hanneford's really does do a good job with their deli and prepared foods, don't they? :)

Here's the link on Hannaford's website about their beef recall: http://www.hannaford.com/content.jsp?pageName=recall12152011&leftNavArea=AboutLeftNav. Thanks for bringing it to Patch readers' attention.

I appreciate the thanks, Paul, but I actually read about it right here on Patch: http://waltham.patch.com/articles/hannaford-s-recalling-some-meat
