New Watertown Cafe Catering to Cake Lovers, Children

Cakes Bakery & Cafe opened April 2 and will feature baked goods, lunch and other treats.

A new destination for cake-lovers is opening today, April 2, in Watertown, but Cakes is more than just a place to get yummy baked goods, said Deana Martin, who co-owns the bakery and café with her husband Keith.

Located at 51 Galen Street, Cakes will be a bakery and café, catering to hungry commuters, people seeking a nice lunch and kids who want a fun place to get a treat, Martin said.

“The focus is on baked goods. We have a large variety of cup cakes, as well as what we call everyday cakes – 6 inch cakes,” Martin said.

Cakes will be open early so people heading to the bus at Watertown Yard can grab a breakfast sandwich, Martin said.

With locations in Arlington and Milton, Martin wanted a spot in Newton, but wound up choosing the location on Galen Street near Watertown Street.

“I grew up in Newton in Nonantum. We wanted a Newton location, but everything was either outrageously expensive or not the right space for us,” Martin said. “Watertown Square is so vibrant, so we will do just as well.”

While Cakes offers sandwiches, wraps and salads, the baked goods is what the place is known for. The Black & White Mousse, which was featured on Phantom Gourmet.

Custom cakes can also be ordered from the bakery.

Martin also seeks to make Cakes a welcoming place for kids. One of the first things you notice walking into the bakery is the light fixtures, which have transparent buckets filled with penny candies.

“It’s kind of our trademark,” Martin said. “People see that and know it’s a place for kids.”

The café will have a kids table with toys and crafts, Martin said, and she plans to host birthday parties and cake decorating events for kids.

When the weather warms up, Martin said, she will have outdoor seating on the patio outside the bakery.

Cakes is open seven days a week, opening at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on weekends. The bakery will be open until 6 or 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and an hour later on Thursdays and Fridays. On Saturday the doors will remain open until 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Street parking is available and there is a lot behind the building, accessible from Aldrich Road. More information is available on the Cakes Web site, http://cakesmilton.com/.
