Sports Authority Will Replace Filene's Basement at Watertown's Arsenal Mall

The national sporting-goods chain will replace the discount closing store, which recently announced its closing at the end of 2011.

Sports Authority will move into the spot that Filene's Basement will soon vacate, the owners of the Arsenal Mall announced Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Simon Property Group Inc.'s press release says the sporting goods chain will open a 33,000-square-foot store in Watertown by the spring of 2012. The store will replace Filene's Basement which is slated to close at the end of 2011.

“We are proud to welcome one of America’s leaders in sporting goods to Arsenal Mall,” said Cindy Kernan, Leasing Representative at Simon Property Group. “We’re continually listening to our customers’ feedback and working to ensure our retail mix is fresh. Sports Authority will provide a wide variety of quality, brand-name sporting goods for the Watertown area community,” she added.

The Watertown store will be the second Sports Authority to open in Massachusetts in less than a year. The store offers sporting apparel and athletic equipment. The Arsenal Mall store will feature top name brands including Nike, Under Armour, adidas, The North Face, TaylorMade and many more, according to the release.

The store will cater to the interest of local customers, offering the best and latest items for team and individual sports, as well as dedicated sections for footwear, apparel, outdoor recreation, golf and fitness, the release said.

“Our new location at the Arsenal Mall in Watertown, Massachusetts will provide industry-leading customer service and a complete selection of quality sporting good products,” said Greg Waters, COO of Sports Authority. “Sports Authority truly believes in celebrating the good in sport and with this new location, we are not only creating local jobs, we’re also providing great value and service to athletes and active families in surrounding communities.”
