The Promised Land: Celebrating the Stories of Boston’s Jewish Immigrants

The New Center for Arts & Culture presents a joyful evening of theatre and storytelling, featuring local celebrities, including award-winning actor Annette Miller, “Chronicle” correspondent Ted Reinstein, Professor Barbara Grossman of Tufts University, and Boston City Councillor Mike Ross. The celebrity narrators will share stories of Boston’s early
Jewish pioneers who overcame great struggles in order to lay the foundation for Boston’s Jewish community today.

The event will chronicle the Jewish experience of immigrating to Boston in the early 19th century, a traditionally inhospitable city due to its Puritan heritage. The evening will focus in part on the story of Mary Antin, author of “The Promised Land.” Published in 1912 and serialized in The Atlantic magazine, Antin’s story of her “second birth” in America became the country’s most famous immigrant autobiography and a symbol of Jewish struggles and achievements.
