Watertown Education Foundation Fourth Annual Spelling Bee Raises $10K

WATERTOWN, February 2014-- The Watertown Education Foundation (WEF) held its 4th Annual Spelling Bee on Sunday, January 26, raising $10,000 for the WEF’s Teacher Grant Fund.  The Teacher Grant Fund provides funding for classroom and/or school-wide initiatives to enhance learning in Watertown Public Schools.

The Watertown Middle School was abuzz with activity as teams of spellers from grades 1-5 eagerly took to the stage.  More than 220 children from the Hosmer, Lowell and Cunniff elementary schools took part in the event.  The winning 5th grade team of Harriet and Maud Neeley and Ennya Papastoitsis each won $50 donated by Belmont Savings Bank along with the title and trophy.

The WEF has awarded more than $27,500 to Watertown educators in the 2013-2014 academic year.  For more information about the grant program and a complete list of winners, please visit the WEF website: www.watertowned.org.

Upcoming WEF Events: March 14, Dancing with the Stars; late spring, town-wide Trivia Night.  Proceeds from both events will fund the Teacher Grant Fund program.  The WEF is also pleased to announce that Staples’ Watertown Square Copy and Print Shop selected the WEF to win a $500 grant as part of a year-end campaign to encourage local community engagement.  “Staples’ in Watertown Square has shown great interest and assistance to WEF with our efforts to support Watertown Public Schools,” said Amy Donohue, WEF President.  “We are thrilled and appreciative to have been awarded this grant.  The money will be used to support the Teacher Grant Fund.”
