A Call for Debates

During the past four months, I have had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of residents, town employees, and business owners throughout Watertown; listening to their views on our community's current needs and also hearing their ideas and visions for our town’s near future.

With the Watertown municipal election only forty days from today, the opportunity to bring these conversations to a wider audience, including all eight candidates for Town Councilor at-Large, is one that I greatly look forward to having.  Currently, there are candidate forums scheduled for School Committee and Town Council President, which will be occurring in the coming weeks.  However, with such a vast amount of choice in the Councilor at-Large race, and such glaring differences in beliefs on relevant issues like cellular towers, dog parks, weekly recycling, and budget appropriations, there are currently no organizations or individuals scheduled to host a forum for the at-Large race.

Two years ago, incumbent Councilors at-Large were re-elected without a challenger on the ballot.  This year, all four seats could be turned over to new voices; however the dialogue that is essential to helping voters make informed decisions is yet to occur.  I am calling on our residents, community leaders, and the dozens of civic organizations throughout Watertown to heed the call in hosting a forum for the upcoming Councilor at-Large race.  Space at Watertown’s Free Public Library is available, our Community Access channel has the ability to broadcast remotely, and the eight at-Large candidates are eager to participate in conversations about Watertown’s immediate and long-term future.

Sincerely,

Michael Dattoli, Candidate for Town Councilor at-Large
61 Carroll Street
