Man Arrested in Bedford After Allegedly Stealing Car from Watertown

A Brighton man allegedly took the car after trying to steal other cars in Watertown.

A Chapman Street resident got a call from Bedford Police in the early hours of Jan. 1 notifying him that his car was involved in an accident.

The owner of the vehicle parked it at about 11:30 p.m. the previous night and he did not realize it was gone. The owner of the car had left a key in the vehicle, which was left unlocked, Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn said.

The car was taken from his home and got into an accident at Hanscom Air Force Base, Lawn said. According to Bedford Police, the man drove onto the base without authorization and he crashed into the Fire Station at the base.

"The driver fled from the crash but was later apprehended in Bedford," Lawn said.

Bedford Police arrested Brian Bubanas, 28, of 499 Washington St. Apt. 3 in Brighton, for receiving stolen property, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, OUI liquor, resisting arrest, and driving with a suspended license.

Watertown Police suspect Bubanas also broke into other cars in town. A Warren Street resident reported his car had been broken into and tried to steal it. A valet key which was kept in the center console was found in the ignition, but the car was dead so it did not start, Lawn said.

Another Warren Street resident received a call from Bedford Police saying they had found his wallet on Bubanas when they arrested him, Lawn said.
