Man Arrested in Watertown After Leading State Police on Chase

The suspect was caught after he hit a light pole on Grove Street.

A high speed chase ended in Watertown early Wednesday morning when a Massachusetts State Trooper arrested a suspect on Grove Street.

At about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, State Trooper John McCarthy pulled over two vehicles he spotted driving 60 mph in a 40 mph zone on Soldiers Field Road in Brighton. When he approached one of the cars, the driver took off, according to State Police.

The driver reached speeds of 80 mph before trying to turn onto Grove Street. The driver lost control, hit a light pole and came to rest on a median strip, according to State Police.

The driver got out, approached the cruiser and began yelling at McCarthy before running away. McCarthy caught up with the suspect after he tripped and fell. The suspect then charged McCarthy, but was pepper sprayed and arrested.

Shelton Christopher, 27, of Quincy, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle as a habitual offender, negligent driving, failing to stop, speeding, resisting arrest and marked lanes violation.

He was held on $5,000 bail in Brighton District Court.
