Watertown Fire Chief Helped Select Winner of Civil Bravery Award Named for 9/11 Victim

Gov. Patrick appointed Mario Orangio to be part of the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award selection committee.

Gov. Deval Patrick tapped Watertown Fire Chief Mario Orangio to be one of the committee members to select the winner of the 2011 Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civil Bravery.

Orangio, who his also a vice president of the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, took part in the selection of the winner of the award named for Sweeney. She was a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11 which was hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001. She used an phone on the airplane to alert airline officials of the hijacking.

During the recent selection meeting, Orangio said he met Sweeney's family. The committee interviewed the finalists and selected a winner, who will be honored on Sept. 11, 2011.
