Watertown Fire Officials Rule Orchard Street Fire Caused by Faulty Furnace

A short circuit in the condensor on a furnace ignited debris in the basement of the home on Orchard Street, causing a two-alarm fire.

A two-alarm fire that heavily damaged the basement of a two-family home on Orchard Street was caused by a condensation pump on a furnace, said Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Tom McManus.

, started when a the condensation pump short circuited and lit flammable items in the basement.

"There was possibly a short circuit with the condensation pump to the furnace," McManus said. "Some debris near it may have ignited." McManus said.

Most of the fire was contained to the basement, but flames did damage the first floor of the house at 81 Orchard St. The rest of the house suffered smoke and water damage.

None of the residents were hurt in the fire, but a pet cat died from smoke inhalation. Other pets in the house, including another cat and a chinchilla, were saved.

The family in the first floor, that includes children who are 5 and 12 are in desperate need of assistance, especially since we are entering the holiday season!! Also, Serve Pro just informed the family that all kitchen electronics, storage containers, and plastic cooking utensils have to be trashed. So, if you have a toaster oven, microwave, blender, hand mixer, Tupperware, spatulas, etc. If you want to help but don't have these items, we would greatly appreciate gift cards (Target, Stop & Shop) or a contribution to the fund. It would be greatly appreciated if you can donate, even a small amount to this family. They have to move into a temporary place with nothing, and with the the poor children are struggling without any of their personal items to help deal with this horrible event. Anything donation can help!!
