Watertown Police caught a man suspected of shoplifting from the Arsenal Mall as he tried to escape along Arsenal Street on the evening of Nov. 16.
Security from Marshalls spotted a man and woman come into the store, and the man – identified later as Michael Frederick Kane – carried a back pack that appeared to be an empty, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn.
“Security observed Kane place multiple sweaters into the backpack and the female put socks inside,” Lawn said. “They exited the store without paying for them and the alarm went off.”
When security approached the couple, the woman ran off into the mall, Lawn said, and the man walked away toward Arsenal Street.
Police located Kane and placed him under arrest. The woman could not be located, Lawn said.
Officers discovered Kane also had three outstanding arrest warrants, Lawn added.
Michael Frederick Kane, 26, of 5 Greentree Lane in Revere, was arrested on charges of shoplifting by concealing merchandise – a second offense, and three warrants from Chelsea District Court: two for shoplifting and one for trespassing, Lawn said.
