Watertown Police Log: Mother Uses Child in Shoplifting Scheme

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Arrests

July 22, 4:38 p.m.: A car ran a stop sign on Palfrey and Spring streets and an officer pulled car over. The driver had an outstanding warrant, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn. Xavier Flody, 26, of          89 Faneuil St. Apt. 253 in Brighton, was arrested on a warrant out of Dorchester District Court for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

July 23, 8:03 a.m.: A Riverside Street resident reported that a woman was sleeping in a laundry room. When police came they discovered she had a warrant, Lawn said. Kimberly A. Collins, 48, homeless, was arrested on a warrant from North Berkshire District Court.

July 23, 4:04 p.m.: Two shoplifters were detained by security at Target after being spotted placing items into computer bags (which had also been taken from the store) and tried to leave without paying, Lawn said. Alex Engels Gutierrez, 26, of 168 Chestnut St. Apt. 1 in Chelsea was arrested and charged with shoplifting by asportation of over $100. Nathaniel Charles Yarde, 24, of 25 Smith St. in Boston, was arrested and charged with shoplifting by asportation.

July 24, 12:45 p.m.: A man tried to take the hardware for a sliding glass door from Home Depot and leave without paying, Lawn said. He also had warrants. Michael R. Morgan, 27, of 1 Elm St. in Saugus, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting by asportation over $100, and two warrants from Chelsea District Court for larceny over $250, and the second for driving with a suspended license and shoplifting over $100.

July 26, 1 p.m.: Police arrested a Brookline man on several charges, including assault and battery to collect a loan. Shujar Rehman, 35, of 212 High St. Apt. 3 in Brookline, was arrested on charges of assault and battery to collect a loan – no weapon used, driving with a suspended license and larceny over $250.

July 27, 2:06 a.m.: A car was stopped in Watertown Square and cars were driving around him. An officer found the driver asleep behind the wheel. He awoke up the driver and detected an odor of alcohol on his breath, Lawn said. Michael J. Kanca, 23, of 59 Tyndall Ave. Apt. 2 in Providence, R.I., was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

July 28, 4:32 p.m.: Security chased a shoplifter out of Sally’s Beauty Supplies in the Watertown Mall, Lawn said. The person took three hair extension kids worth over $300. He also had earrings from Wet Seal in Boston, Lawn said. Justin Boris Wright, 24, of 280 Belair St. in Brockton, was arrested in charges of shoplifting by asportation – a third offense, and receiving stolen property.

 

Incident

July 22, 4:04 p.m.: A Garmin GPS device was taken from a work van that was parked on Putnam Street, Lawn said.

July 22, 6:57 p.m.: Target security stopped a woman and her children who concealed merchandise in shopping bags, put them in a cart and gave the cart to a child who attempted to push the cart out of the store without paying, Lawn said. The mother, a 37-year-old from Allston, will be summonsed to Waltham District Court for shoplifting over $100 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The Department of Children and Families was notified about the incident, Lawn said.

July 24, 1:02 p.m.: A wallet was stolen from the municipal parking lot and the wallet was mailed back, but $100 in cash was missing, Lawn said.

July 25, 1:11 p.m.: A pocketbook was left at a desk at Tufts Health Care at about 11 a.m. and when the owner returned at 1 p.m. she discovered $1,100 in cash missing, Lawn said.

July 26, 10:42 a.m.: Three 32-inch televisions were taken from rooms at the Super 8 Motel while the rooms were being cleaned.

July 26, 5;02 p.m.: A resident expected to receive a package with a makeup kit inside, but it never arrived, Lawn said.

July 27, 12:06 p.m.: Someone broke the lock off a storage locker at Commonwealth Landscaping and $4,700 in landscaping equipment was stolen, Lawn said.
