Planning Board Approves 65-Unit Development on the Westside of Watertown

Dozens of residents spoke out against the mixed-use project, which will also include space for offices and a restaurant.

Despite the protest of dozens of residents, the Watertown Planning Board approved a permit for a mixed use project between Howard and Bacon streets that would include 65 housing units.

The development on the property at 60 Howard St. and 45 Bacon St. is the latest on the Westside of Watertown, where hundreds of new apartments and condos have gone up in the last couple years. Because it is in the Pleasant Street Corridor, the project is approved by the Planning Board, rather than the Zoning Board.

The new project would demolish two buildings that formerly made up Circle Supply and the construction of nearly 10,500 sq. ft. of commercial space, including an 80-seat restaurant, according to a report in the Boston Globe. Housing units would range from studios to three-bedroom units.

Residents complained about another large development popping up in their residential neighborhood. The project is not far from the new housing project on the former Haartz-Mason factory on Pleasant Street, and has also seen a one story build replaced by a three story rock climbing complex - Central Rock Gym.
