Two Mixed Use Projects with Housing May be in the Works in Watertown

Two projects - one with 65 housing units, the other with 24 - will soon be brought before Planning Board.

Another development with residential units will be proposed in the Pleasant Street Corridor.

On Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., the Planning Board will hear a proposal from World Realty and Development for a mixed-used development that would included 65 residential units at 60 Howard St./45 Bacon Street.

To make way for the project, two buildings would be razed. The property used to be Circle Supplier according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Along with the housing, the project would include 10,414 sq. ft. of commercial space and a roof deck. The space could include a restaurant. A parking structure would accommodate 124 vehicles and 24 additional spaces will be built on ground level.

The project will also include a publically-accessible recreation area and pedestrian path.

The project lies in the Pleasant Street Corridor. Special rules were put in place by the Town Council to encourage new building projects or redevelopment of current buildings.

Unlike most areas of town, a special permit request for a development in the Pleasant Street Corridor does not need to go before the Zoning Board of Appeals, but rather just requires the OK from the Planning Board.

Another mixed-use project appears to be in the planning, too. The Globe reported developers seek to build a project with 24-unit housing and close to 2,000 square feet of retail and office space at 33 Mount Auburn St. (formerly Port Oil). Steve Magoon, director of Economic Development and Planning, said this project will likely be on the December Planning Board agenda.
