VIDEO: Semon Slams Markey in New Web Ad

U.S. Rep. Ed Markey is under fire in a fundraising video from Republican challenger Jeff Semon of Lexington.

For many months now, has had his sights set on Congressman Ed Markey’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. But now the Malden Democrat is the target of Semon’s latest Web ad, released on June 26.

The video, titled “Why Washington is Broken,” casts Markey as driving the ideological divide between Democrats and Republicans with extreme views and rhetoric.

“Ed Markey is the most divisive member of the House of Representatives and all Americans need to be made aware of the damage he is doing to our country,” Semon says in a press release announcing the video. “As I mentioned in the video, we need solutions in Washington, not slander.”

The press release – which reminds voters that Markey was elected to his seat in 1976, the year Semon was born – charges that Markey represents a “radical left wing agenda” rather than his constituents.

Markey isn’t alone in the crosshairs of Semon's stongly worded messaging. In a video from his May 21 introductory speech at the Marine Corps League in Watertown, which Semon’s campaign tweeted out recently, Semon cracks on the Occupy Wall Street movement and career academics.

“I went to UMass Amherst business school and when I graduated from business school I got a job, and you know what it was tough to make ends meet,” Semon said in his remarks, “So I didn’t go out and occupy Wall Street, I went out and occupied a second job.”

He also said conservatives will risk their life savings on an idea or business in the private sector, while liberals shy away from the private sector.

“We take a chance in this magical land called the private sector, a place where you’re measured by your results," Semon said, "Whereas liberals they gravitate toward academia and government, where they’re not measured by their results; they get tenure, lifetime pensions.”
