Article written by Ryan Grannan-Doll

Massachusetts public health officials have raised the risk level for West Nile Virus in Watertown from low to moderate, according to the Boston Globe.

The news comes after mosquitoes in Belmont and Waltham recently tested positive for WNV this summer.

The risk level was also raised to moderate in Waltham, Newton and Cambridge due to “similarities in mosquito habitat types,” according to the state health officials.

WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito infected with the virus. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection.
