Girl Power Shining Through in Watertown High School Athletics

With only one loss each, the girls' basketball and ice hockey teams have had a successful winter.

Watertown High School has long been known for the success of the girls on the field hockey team, but this year two winter sports squads have shown they too can be considered among the state's best.

The Raiders' girls' basketball and girls' ice hockey teams have enjoyed a very successful season, losing just one game apiece. The high school sports experts at the Boston Globe have taken notice.

The hoops squad (9-1) is currently ranked 12th in this week's Boston Globe poll. The Raiders were 10th until they lost their first game at Wilmington, 56-54. Last year the team made it to the North Section Final, and may be headed for more success this year.

The hockey team is a joint effort by towns which are normally rivals - Watertown and Belmont. After several years running a co-op team with Melrose, Watertown started a new partnership this year. The team is 10-1 and ranked 17th in the Boston Globe poll. The team was undefeated until falling to second ranked Reading, 4-2.
