New Principal Named for Newton's Lincoln-Eliot Elementary

The school's new principal will be Darilyn Donovan, who currently serves as interim assistant superintendent in Watertown.

Starting in September, students at  in Newton will have a new principal leading their school. 

Superintendent David Fleishman has appointed Darilyn Donovan to be the next principal of Lincoln-Eliot. Donovan currently works as the interim assistant superintendent in the Watertown Public Schools. 

Fleishman reported on the Lincoln-Eliot news at last night's School Committee meeting. 

Donovan will replace current Lincoln-Eliot Interim Principal Greg Hurray, who will retire at the end of this school year. 

In a Feb. 15 memo, Fleishman made Donovan's appointment official, noting her experience as both a teacher and an administrator.

"Throughout the search, Dari impressed us with her instructional leadership ability, communication skills, and keen focus on the academic and emotional needs of students," Fleishman said in the memo. "In addition, she has demonstrated a capacity for leadership that is characterized by collaboration, flexibility and sensitivity."

Prior to her position as Watertown's interim assistant superintendent, Donovan was principal at the Lowell Elementary School in Watertown. She graduated from Boston College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a Master of Arts degree in curriculum and instruction from Lesley College. 

Donovan will officially begin her position in Newton on July 1, 2012. 

"Over the past two months, it has been a great pleasure to work with various stakeholders in the Lincoln-Eliot community on the principal search process. The Selection Advisory Committee did a terrific job throughout the entire search and I am grateful for their commitment to ensuring that Lincoln-Eliot would find a highly capable leader," Fleishman said in the memo.

Donovan is the second Watertown administrator to recently move to Newton Public Schools; last spring . 

Fleishman also noted last night that the search for a new principal at has been narrowed down to three candidates. The administration is hoping to wrap up the selection process in the next week, he said.
