Watertown Schools Open Tuesday, Start Delayed 2 Hours

The schools will reopen on Tuesday after the Blizzard of 2013.

Watertown students will be back in class on Tuesday, but two hours later than normal.

Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald's office sent out information about the delayed start, following snow days on Friday and Monday due to the Blizzard of 2013.

Because of the large amount of snow on sidewalks in town, school officials encourage parents to drive their children to school and to used the designated drop off areas.

High school students will not be allowed to park at the school. All the parking will be used by staff because of the lack of street parking due to the snow emergency, which continues until further notice.

There will be no morning pre-school classes on Tuesday.

School opening times for Tuesday, February 12, 2013 are as follows:

Cunniff and Lowell - 10:15 a.m.
Hosmer - 10:20 a.m.
Watertown Middle School - 9:35 a.m.
Watertown High School - 9:55 a.m.

That's ridiculous, clean the school parking lots, sidewalks and play areas.

Oh and if one does not drive how so do you suggest getting to school walk in the middle of the street?

Shame on them. Delaying by two hours means that in our house with two working parents, we are faced with a tough decision about how our kids will get to school. I am not sure that a two hour delay is going to help anything when a quick survey of the route from our house to the school shows no route with contiguous shoveled sidewalks. Plenty of areas of Mt. Auburn St. are still not shoveled. Should we expect children to walk in the streets at 9:20 or so in order to get to school in time? This is absurd. A normal opening would allow people to drop their children off as normal. Shame on this place. It makes it really difficult to justify living here when you see how surrounding communities serve their residents.

I will email Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald and suggest that people that take any issue with this do the same: jean.fitzgerald@watertown.k12.ma.us

"Because of the large amount of snow on sidewalks in town, school officials encourage parents to drive their children to school" Better to inconvenience thousands of students, teacher and parent than to ask the WDPW to do its job. The Superintendent has a "winter illness".
