Watertown Will Start Process of Getting State Money to Renovate Schools

The Town schools face overcrowding, and are aging.

Watertown School officials will soon take the first step toward getting state funding to help renovate the town schools.

The Watertown Public Schools face a potential crowding problem and the schools are aging. The elementary schools - Hosmer, Cunniff and Hosmer - have particular problems with growing enrollment.

Superintendent Jean Fitzgerald will send a Statement of Interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

"In the Statement of Interest we don't have to know how we are going to fix it, just state what the problem is," Fitzgerald said. "If there is more than one project we must prioritize."

To get into the process to get state funding, the application must be submitted between January and April. The town must be ready to fund the rest of the project within two years, Fitzgerald said.
