Former High School Star, Bentley Basketball Player Dies During Game in Watertown

Bentley University and former Cardinal Spellman player Joey Glynn collapses and died during a summer league game at Saltonstall Park.

A Watertown Summer Basketball League game turned tragic when one of the players collapsed and died on Monday.

Former Cardinal Spellman star and Bentley University player Joey Glynn, 19, of Abington, collapsed while playing for the Middlesex Magic, a team in the Watertown Summer Basketball League, according to a report in the Boston Herald. He was taken to Mount Auburn Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Herald reported.

A teammate told the Herald that there was no physical contact.

"He just went down and the game was stopped. Everyone is still stunned, just can't believe something like this happened," Michael Crotty Jr. told the Herald.

The Pappas Elite League plays games at Saltonstall Park, on outdoor courts behind the Watertown Boys and Girls Club. The league features current and former college players.

The 6-foot-6 Glynn played 26 games at Bentley during his freshman year and averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds a game, according to the report.

At Cardinal Spellman he scored 1,000 points by the time he was a junior and finished with 1,425 points and 803 rebounds, according to the Herald. He made the Boston Herald Dream Team his senior year.

Glynn and Cardinal Spellman took on Watertown in the Eastern Mass Final in 2011, where they lost to the Raiders, who were led by Marco Coppola.

He also played in two EMass High School Super Bowls while at Cardinal Spellman, according to his profile on Bentley Athletics.
