Raiders' Rally Falls Short, Lose 14-8

Turnovers hurt Northfield in its game against visiting St. Paul Central.

A late-game interception on a halfback option ended an impropable comeback for the on Friday night at .

With the interception, Northfield lost to visiting St. Paul Central 14-8.

The Minutemen capitalized on several turnovers from the Raiders to build a 14-0 lead. Following a fourth-down stop by the Raiders, it was a halfback option with running back Devin Walker connecting with wide receiver Eric Shepley that put the Raiders on the board midway through the fourth quarter. They followed up with a two-point conversation from Walker to make it 14-8.

St. Paul Central immediately responded with a drive down the field, but were stopped by the Raiders on a fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line.

With 2:16 left in the game, Northfield put together several short plays to drive down the field. The Raiders made it to St. Paul Central's 30-yard line before a holding call and a 10-yard penalty, which was followed by a sack of Northfield quarterback Jake Mathison.

With 32.2 seconds left in the game, the Raiders tried the halfback option again. But the pass was short and Walker dropped it. Because it was behind the line of scrimmage, Walker could pick it up, which he did. But his throw down the field was intercepted. The Minutemen took a knee to end the game.

The Raiders next play 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, against Farmington at Memorial Field.
