Watertown Captures Fifth Straight Field Hockey State Title

The Raiders defeated Auburn 1-0 in the final in Worcester on Saturday.

Auburn did what no other team had done this year in Saturday's state final - hold the Watertown field hockey team to one goal. But the Rockets suffered the fate of so many teams who took on the Raiders this year, they could not score one of its own.

The Raiders had trouble moving the ball up field with short passes in the game at WPI, so they began hitting the ball long. On one such pass, with 12 minutes left in the first half, Watertown junior Rachel Campbell chased down the ball, beat the last defender and then fed the ball to sophomore Mikayla Paone for the games only goal.

"It was a really great pass from Rachel, and it was exciting," Paone said about the goal.

The long balls were part of the game plan, said co-captain Allie Doggett.

"Hustle makes up for everything that’s how we score goals - our speed," Doggett said.

Auburn had its chances, getting several corners and rushed downfield, but they could not get the ball past the Raiders' junior goalie Madeline Rocklin-Waltch.

Watertown completed a perfect 23-0 season, won a fifth-straight state title (the program's 14th overall) and continued the state record unbeaten streak - now 115 straight.

Despite the winning tradition, the 2013 title was special for the team, Donahue said.

"I’m very excited for these girls. For many of the it is their first time being a state champion and I am very happy for them all," Donahue said.
