The 2012 St. Mary of Carmen Festival Kicks off Tomorrow in Nonantum

The 77th annual event will take place in the village of Nonantum from July 11-15, 2012.

It's that time of year – the streets of Nonantum and  in Newton will soon be filled with rides, games, food and music for the . 

The festival kicks off tomorrow, July 11, and runs through Sunday, July 15. Each day of the festival will include a carnival and entertainment in the evening, with a different band/act playing each night. 

A Holy Triduum Mass will also be celebrated Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at on Washington Street.

The festivities culminate on Sunday, the Feast Day, with an 8 a.m. St. Mary of Carmen Mass (at ) followed by a procession through the streets of Nonantum with the North End Marching Band at 2 p.m.

Sunday will also include a scholarship raffle, which, according to Festival Chairman Chuck Proia, includes many prizes with the Grand Prize being a high definition large screen TV. 

Sunday will conclude with a candlelight procession to Our Lady's at 10 p.m.

The annual festival is sponsored by the St. Mary of Carmen Society, a group of Italian-Americans who support local organizations and schools through scholarships and volunteer work.

Wednesday, July 11
7 p.m. - Charley Noble Band
8 p.m. - Thirty-5 Times

Thursday, July 12
7 p.m. - Axminster

Friday, July 13
7 p.m. - Legit Band

Saturday, July 14
7 p.m. - Alex Gimenez and The Garden City Band
8 p.m. - The Reminsants

Sunday, July 15
8 a.m. - St. Mary of Carmen Mass
2 p.m. - Procession through the streets of Nonantum with the North End Marching Band
6 p .m. - Seabreeze
9 p.m. - Scholarship and raffle winners announced
10 p.m. - Candlelight procession to Our Lady's Church, followed by the Flight of the Angel

Note: The $2,500 cash raffle previously mentioned in this story has been canceled due to lack of sales. The scholarship raffle is still planned, though.
