Big Win For 12U Raiders

The Watertown 12U Raiders beat Waltham last Thursday night 12-6 to improved their record to 3-2. It was one of those bitter/sweet wins. Sweet because it was a huge win against a very good team. The very well coached Waltham team beat Watertown in both contests last year. As coach Costa put it “they really took it to us last year”. This win shows just how hard these girls have worked. Bitter because Waltham has been a huge supporter of Softball in Watertown. Stephen McGovern and Leo Cardarelli really helped the Watertown program a lot last year as Watertown softball, in it’s first year, was trying to get organized. They gave the Watertown girls some teams to play against and fields to play on. They are true friends to our program and it is always fun to compete against them. Waltham continues to help Watertown Softball this year by fielding a combined team of Waltham and Watertown girls to form an 18U summer team that is competing very well in the Middle Essex league.

Some highlights from the game included a great slide into second base from Kate Myler who later ended up scoring at a time when Waltham was leading. The scoring effort started a rally that helped to win the game. The pitching duo of Destiny Santalucia (win) and Christine MacLeod (save) combined for 9 strikeouts and only gave up 4 hits over 5 innings. The game also featured 3 strong doubles coming from Caroline Costa, Amelia Doyle and Christine Zhu. Contributing to the Raiders first error free game was Catherine and Anna Papayannopoulus, Aiden Carroll, Sarah Benites, Haley Bass, Kate Myler, Mairead Walsh and Arianna Curry.
