Subcommittees Want Bus to Run Down Pleasant St. to Watertown Square

The new route of the MBTA's 558 bus would serve the new developments on Pleasant Street.

  Two Town Council subcommittees want to request a change of the route of the MBTA's 558 bus so it serves all of Pleasant Street, and the new housing developments in the area. There could be 1,000 new housing units in the Pleasant Street corridor, from Seyon Street in Waltham to Watertown Square, Town Councilor John Donohue told the subcommittees on State, Federal & Regional Government and Enconomic Development & Planning. Repton place is half built, and there are projects at the former Haartz Mason property and at 140 Pleasant Street, he said, and there is a 211-unit proposal on Waltham Street and another in Waltham on Seyon Street. Councilor Donohue Wants to Change the Route of the MBTA's 558 Bus

The change would serve the new apartments complexes on Pleasant Street.

With nearly 200 apartments planned to be added along Pleasant Street and the redevelopment of the Boston Scientific building, Town Councilor John Donohue has proposed changing the route of the MBTA's 558 bus so it runs the entire length of the street. The bus route runs from the Riverside T station in Newton, through Waltham, along River Street and into Watertown where the street changes to Pleasant Street. Currently the bus makes a right on Bridge Street and heads down Chapel Street eventually winding up in Newton Corner. From there it heads to downtown Boston. Donohue would like to see the bus continue to the end of Pleasant Street, in Watertown Square, where it would then turn right and head down Galen Street to Newton Corner. Along …

Sounds good for Watertown and the new residences coming in, but I could imagine the current riders of that bus not liking the fact that it would lengthen the bus route, thus increasing the time it takes to get to one's destination.   more ›
