Friday is Deadline for Filing Mortgage Foreclosure Settlement Claims

Massachusetts residents who lost their homes to foreclosure from 2008 to 2011 have until Jan. 18 to file a claim as part of a $25 billion settlement.

  If you lost your home to bank foreclosure anytime in 2008-2011, you have until Friday to file a claim for a one-time payment as part of a $25 billion settlement. The agreement was reached between five major lenders and 49 states' attorneys general, including Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, for unlawful foreclosures, including robo-signing of documents. Coakley's office estimates that about 21,000 Massachusetts residents are eligible for payment under the settlement.  Her office says that last fall, claim forms were sent to those residents who had lost their homes to foreclosure and who might be eligible for payment. Three book publishers have agreed to a settlement in price-fixing conspiracy.

Massachusetts residents who bought e-books through the publishers Hachette Book Group Inc., HarperCollins Publishers LLC, and Simon & Schuster Inc., in the past two years could get a piece of more than $2 million in restitution, officials say. The three book publishers have agreed to pay more than $69 million to customers across the country who bought e-books from April 1, 2010, through May 21, 2012, to settle allegations of price fixing, according to a press release from the office of Attorney General Martha Coakley. “We found compelling evidence that these companies conspired to fix prices and overcharge consumers for some of the most popular e-book titles,” Coakley said, in the release. “Today’s settlement paves the way for restitution …

You can also check out ebooks for free from the public library system! I will definitely stick with ebooks -- very easy to read on treadmill & elliptical, and light and easy to take when traveling. I love it when I finish a book and in just a flash can start the next one while I am traveling.   more ›
