Watertown's Bob McCarthy Will Not Run for State Senate

The challenger in this year's special election has pulled out of the race to challenge State Sen. Will Brownsberger.

The following information was provided by the Robert McCarthy for Senate campaign:  Robert B. McCarthy, of Watertown, announced today that he will not be a candidate for State Senate, Second Suffolk and Middlesex. “While undergoing intensive rehabilitation therapy from two total knee replacements within the last 11 months, I have decided not to submit the necessary signatures May 1 as a candidate for the office of State Senator in the Second Middlesex and Suffolk district,” McCarthy said. “This was not an easy decision, but after talking with family and friends I believe this is the best decision for me at this time. Bob McCarthy Pulls Papers to Run for State Senate

The candidate in the special election for the Second Suffolk & Middlesex District will run for the seat again in the fall.

The following was information was released by Robert McCarthy's campaign: Robert B. McCarthy, a Watertown Democrat, announced today that he has taken out nomination papers for the office of State Senator representing the new Second Suffolk and Middlesex Senate District. McCarthy was a candidate for Senate Senate in a special election held last December to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the Senator Steven Tolman, now President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. In a race that included four candidates, McCarthy came in second in each of the district’s communities, which included Belmont, Watertown, Cambridge and Boston.   McCarthy is a third generation Watertown firefighter, who retired as a Fire Captain with 34 years of service …

Hecht: Brownsberger Got His Supporters Out, Won State Senate Election [Video]

The Watertown State Representative said he got the numbers he wanted, but Belmont's 30 percent turnout made the difference.

After a short, but intense campaign, Watertown State Rep. Jonathan Hecht said he was happy with his vote totals, but the larger-than-expected turnout in Belmont carried Belmont State Rep. Will Brownsberger to victory. Brownsberger won the Democratic primary in the special election to fill Steven Tolman's Second Suffolk and Middlesex State Senate seat with with a total of 4,958 (35.5 percent) The district covers all of Watertown, Belmont, and parts of Cambridge and Boston. Hecht finished second with 3,899 (26 percent), followed by former state firefighters union president Bob McCarthy of Watertown, who had 3,436 votes (22 percent), and Brighton attorney Tim Schofield garnered 2,887 votes (19 percent). Tolman to Endorse McCarthy in Senate Race Monday

Retired union chief wins support from former state senator who now runs state AFL-CIO.

State Sen. candidate Robert McCarthy will receive the all-important endorsement of Steve Tolman, the popular long-time senator who the Watertown resident is seeking to succeed on Beacon Hill. According to a press release from McCarthy's campaign, the annoucement will take place at noon on Monday, Nov. 28, at Belmont's Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St. The primary election will be held on Dec. 13.
