The foursome will compete against the nation's best high school runners. Watertown's C.J. Logan heading to Villanova to play football; wrestlers head to state meet.
Four Watertown athletes will test themselves against the nation's best track athletes in March when the Raiders' 4 x 200 meter girls relay team heads to the New Balance Indoor Track Nationals in New York City. The foursome of seniors Talia Flores, Meaghan Kelly and Lauren Basile and junior Christelle Madou qualified for the meet with their performance at the McIntyre Elite Meet at the Reggie Lewis Track Center on Jan. 29, said WHS girls' track coach Dave Mastro. "They came in third with a time of 1:48.08 – the qualifying time is 1:49 – and they set a new school record," Mastro said. Most of the team members are not strangers to success. Flores, Kelly and Basile were part of the previous school record team, along with Rachel Thomas, who …

Senior quarterback C.J. Logan helped put make the Raiders a winning program again.
He was the centerpiece of the offense and a main reason why the trend is heading north for the Watertown football program, and now he can call himself "Athlete of the Year" in Watertown. C.J. Logan is the recipient of the first ever "Athlete of the Year" award handed out by Watertown Patch. The senior led the Raiders to a 7-4 record, just one win shy of Watertown's first 8-win season since 1983, and he accounted for 26 touchdowns (15 through the air, and 11 on the ground). Logan now has to decide where he is going to play his college football, and right now the inside track is with Bentley University. Logan has a verbal commitment with the school, but he is still keeping his options open in case something else pops up. The talented …

The Raiders seek to end five-game losing streak to the Marauders. The teams meet for the 89th time Thursday in Belmont.
There are many reasons why Watertown head football coach John Cacace wants a win over Belmont on Thanksgiving. You might even call it an early Christmas list. If the Raiders beat Belmont on the road on Thursday at 10:15 a.m., you can bet that Cacace would be a very, very happy man at the dinner table. "It's been a good season so far, but realistically this game means more than just one game," Cacace said of the 89th meeting between the two schools on Turkey Day. "We've got to break this losing streak and cap off our season." Belmont is on sort of a down year at 3-5, and this could be the right time to grab a victory, especially with C.J. Logan playing in his last game for Watertown. "He's our big play guy," said Cacace. "He accounts for …

Raiders take on a "big" Wakefield team tonight with a three winning streak on the line.
If the Watertown football team wants to extend its winning streak to three games, it will have to try and derail a big Wakefield team that will be looking to keep its late season surge plowing through to the rest of the season. Wakefield boasts a big line on both sides of the ball, with a few players north of 260 pounds. The visitors also have at their disposal at 6-foot-5-inch, 275-pound monster at tight end in Anthony Fabiano who has already committed to play football at Harvard in the future. With a line that averages close to 220-pounds, the Raiders will have to be on their toes to counter-attack the beef that Wakefield possesses up front. "They are a very large, physical team," said Watertown head coach John Cacace. "I think we've got…

Logan throws four touchdowns to give Watertown second Middlesex League victory Friday
Quarterback C.J. Logan threw four touchdown passes Friday, to help Watertown win an offensive shootout 35-28 over Melrose in the Raiders' final game at Victory Field. Logan hit Greg Geagan with a 6-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to open the scoring, but the Raider quarterback was only getting warmed up. In the second quarter Dean Anderson broke off a long, 48-yard scoring run to even the score at 7-7, but Watertown answered right back when Logan found Brendan Wojtowicz for a 32-yard touchdown pass. Anderson scored once again for Melrose, this time on a 2-yard to tie it up at 14-14, followed by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Reale to Spencer Walsh to give Melrose a 21-14 lead at the half. Watertown opened the scoring in …

Raiders host Melrose to close home schedule.
The Watertown High football team has many reasons why it wants a win over Melrose on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Victory Field. The game marks the last time the senior class will step foot on Victory Field in full uniform. A win would mean another "W" in the Middlesex League standings, and maybe most important, it would mark the first victory in three tries for the Red Raiders over Melrose since John Cacace took over as head coach. "We are going to come out and play with some passion and some energy," said the head coach. Watertown is 6-2 so far this season, but have split its two games inside the Middlesex League. Cacace had a goal of finishing above .500 in the league standings this season, and a win over Melrose would go a long way …

Watertown featured a strong defense and the dual threat of C.J. Logan to overcome a feisty Stoneham squad on Friday night.
Two second half touchdown runs by Watertown quarterback C.J. Logan sealed the Raiders to a 28-13 victory on the road against Stoneham, Friday night. The Red Raiders squared off against Stoneham High football at Stoneham on a chilly Friday night in front of 300 fans. Watertown, which was coming off a demoralizing 35-14 loss to Burlington High School, promised to come out on the attack. Before the game, Watertown Head Coach John Cacace had made the point that Logan would be featured "early and often" against a Stoneham team that had not won a game all season. Cacace's squad, now 6-2, made good on his promise in the early going. Already up 7-0, Logan led his team down the field with a mix of runs and passes. The drive culminated in an arching…

Red Raiders travel to Stoneham in search of a win after last week's loss to Burlington.
After a demoralizing loss, it's always interesting to see which team shows up on the field during the next week: the one that bounces back or the team that continues to slide in the wrong direction. The Watertown High football faced a situation very similar to the one it is in now just a few weeks ago. After a 14-0 loss to Weston, the Red Raiders rattled off two wins — one in blowout fashion and one by a score of 14-12 over Archbishop Williams. Burlington put a hurting on the Red Raiders last week to the score of 35-14, and Watertown Head Coach John Cacace had to watch his defense struggle against a mighty rushing attack. "We didn't have that much success against Burlington," said Cacace. "But they are one of the best ground attacks in the…

After some frustrating years, Watertown High School can secure its second straight winning season this fall. John Cacace's squad heads into the final stretch, led by quarterback C.J. Logan.
There was a time, in the not-so-distant past, when the Watertown High football team was stuck in a 22-game losing streak. Enter John Cacace and his coaching staff four years ago and the Red Raiders could be looking at their second consecutive winning season. The Red Raiders, who finished last season with a 6-5 record last year after winning five games combined in the previous two years, now sit at 5-2 after moving through a tough nonleague schedule. Cacace said the turnaround started when the players started buying into the system and believing that better times were ahead, and that started with a "winning" commitment in the offseason workouts. "The expectations for winning and playing well are light years from where they used to be," said…
