A governor's visit to honor residents and responders at the start of the season, a week late.
The grass was cut and green, the baseball lines wide and white, the pitching mound built up and the infield smooth as glass. For Greg Salvucci, who has been running the league for 22 years, this year was already special; the growing Watertown Youth Baseball League added two softball divisions for girls, a 13-year-old and 14- to 16-year-old divisions and a Challenger division, enabling boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 4 to 18, to play ball, made possible through the support of the Mount Auburn Hospital. …

Also, Recreation Department has job openings - see them on Patch.
The following information was provided by the Watertown Recreation Department: Some big changes could be coming to Casey Park, and residents can find out more at a community meeting on Jan. 8. The large park on Watertown Street south of the river includes a little league baseball field, basketball courts, tennis courts and a children's play structure. Recently, Recreation Director Peter Centola presented potential upgrades to the Town Council, including: building an outdoor ice/street hockey rink, repairs to the tennis courts and upgrades to the baseball field. The street hockey rink will be flooded during the winter for outdoor skating and hockey. Other improvements include improvements to the baseball fields and refurbishing the tennis courts.
Watertown residents will have a place to skate outdoors during the winter after renovation work is completed at Casey Park. The park on Watertown Street will have a number of improvements as part of the renovation project. Recreation Director Peter Centola presented the latest plans to the Town Council Tuesday night, which includes upgrades to the little league baseball field, rebuilding the tennis courts, new lights for the basketball courts and addition of parking spaces. The renovations will cost an estimated $550,000, Centola said, and $90,000 has already been set aside in the Fiscal 2013 budget. The remainder would have to be borrowed by the town. The rink would go on part of the area where the tennis courts now stand, said Glen …

Area would be used for street hockey in warmer months. New lighting and repairs to the tennis court also planned.
Ice skates could be gliding on an outdoor sheet of ice if the Recreation Departement's plans become a reality. The rink would be used for skating during the winter and street hockey and other games during the warmer months, said Recreation Department Director Peter Centola. It is part of the plan for the renovation of Casey Park on Watertown Street. The ice would be surrounded by board with a chain-link fence on top, rather than plexiglas, said Glen Howard of design firm CDM presented the plans to the Town Council Tuesday night. "It would be about half the length and 75 percent the width of the rink used by the (NHL's Boston) Bruins," Howard said. Town Councilor Angeline Kounelis worried that people might get hurt if they hit the poles …

Watertown has roads to fix and schools to improve. I don't want to see $500K spent on an outdoor ice rink , especially after this "winter".   more ›
