Giving Tuesday: A Chance to Give Back During the Holiday Season

Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter, the Charles River Watershed Association and the Brattle Film Foundation are among the nonprofits trying to encourage people to pause in their shopping and find a way to help others.

  Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season?  A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. For many people, the holiday shopping marathon began on Thanksgiving day, with some national chains opening their doors just hours after the traditional turkey dinner. Then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, which has morphed into Cyber Week. Now, there's a new campaign asking you to open your wallet _ Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, is designed "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." …

Watertown VFW Hosting Free Holiday Meal for Veterans

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1105 will provide a meal for veterans on Dec. 2.

  Veterans can enjoy a holiday meal from the Watertown Veterans of Foreign Wars on Sunday, Dec. 2, and it's free. The VFW Post 1105, located at 295 Arsenal St., will offer the veteran community a free holiday dinner.  Post Commander Derek Mayerhofer said he wanted to help out some vets who he knew. "There are two World War II vets who have no family, so we said we have got to do something for them," Mayerhofer said.  The dinner is open to any veteran and their families, said Gina Rada, Watertown's Veterans Agent. The dinner will be on December 2, 2012 at the VFW, from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Donate Items to Victims of Hurricane Sandy at Watertown High School

The items collected will be collected through Friday and delivered to New Jersey and New York.

  Students at Watertown High School have started a drive to collect items for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Items for the Hurricane Sandy Relief Goods Drive must be dropped off by Friday Nov. 9. They can be taken to the main office the gym. All donations will go directly to the victims in New York and New Jersey through the Red Cross. The drive seeks the following items to support the relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Sandy in the devastated areas of New York and New Jersey: 1. Sealed Bottled Water 2. New Blankets 3. Personal Items: Soap, Toothpaste, etc.. 4. Games for Children 5. Canned/Non-Perishable Foods

Watertown Man Contributes to Jimmy Fund Golf's $6.4 million Fund Raiser

Justin Mosca recently participated in the 30th annual Jimmy Fund Classic golf tournament.

The following information was provided by The Jimmy Fund: Jimmy Fund Golf raised more than $6.4 Million for Cancer Research, and Watertown's Justin Mosca attended the 30th annual Jimmy Fund Classic to celebrate the successful fund-raising season. The event, at The International Golf Club in Bolton on Oct. 1, is an annual event that recognizes tournament organizers and sponsors who helped raise more than $6.4 million in 2012 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Jimmy Fund Golf is one of the largest and oldest grassroots charity golf programs in the nation and since 1983 the organization has raised more than $91 million for life-saving cancer research and treatment. Town Council Presents Watertown Groups with $50,000 in Harvard/O'Neil Charitable Funds

A variety of groups received money to provide services that the town and schools would not be able to provide.

Tuesday night, the Town Council Chambers were filled with groups serving those in Watertown who need some extra help, and who the town cannot serve.  The Town Council honored more than 20 community organizations and non-profit groups, and handed out more than $50,000 in grants from the Harvard/O'Neil Community Enrichment Funds. "Thank you for what you do," Town Council President Mark Sideris said to the representatives of the grant recipients. "I think I speak for the whole council when I say all of you provide services we can't provide as a community and reach a lot of people we can't serve." This is the 11th year that the funds have been handed out. They come from a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement the town made with Harvard …
