Josh Passell gives the latest about the work of the Watertown Dog Park Task Force.
To the editor: As a member of the Watertown Dog Park Task Force, I'd like to let town residents know what we've been up to the last few months. We have approached town councilors and managers to let them know of our goal of a dedicated park in Watertown where dogs can run off-leash, and we've been pleased with the reception. We are now drafting a specific proposal to bring before the council for its consideration, basing it on dog parks in neighboring towns. We have our eyes on the site of the soon-to-relocate recycling center on Grove Street. Fenced off, and provided with a few basic amenities, this recovered park land would make an ideal site. Our experience as (uninvited) guests in other dog parks teaches us that these gathering spots …

The front of the park on Grove Street is going to be redeveloped, and a place for pooches is one of the suggestions.
A group of Watertown residents is looking for a place to put a dog park, and the Conservation Commission seeks to redevelop the former recycling center at Filippello Park. But is that the right spot to allow dogs to run off the leash? The town's recycling center and some basketball courts now sit in the area near the entrance to Filippello Park off Grove Street, but the area will be improved. Recreation Director Peter Centola said the town is looking to add something that fits the space and also provides something not currently offered in Watertown's parks. A group asking for a dog park requested that at least part of the space be used for a dog park. Other ideas that have been suggested include a bocce ball court and/or chess tables. Do…

The Conservation Commission has started talking about how the land where the recycling center now sits will be used after it moves.
Watertown has a rare opportunity to add something new to one of the largest recreation areas in town, and town officials want residents to share their ideas for what to put in area near the entrance to Filippello Park. Currently, there are basketball courts in the spot and the recycling center operates in the area, but that will soon move to Stanley Avenue on the West End of Watertown. With the space freeing up, the Conservation Commission and the Recreation Department seek ideas for how to use the property, which sits along the driveway into Filippello Park off Grove Street, said Watertown's Director of Recreation Peter Centola. "It's a matter of what the Conservation Commission recommends, what fits and what makes sense," Centola said. "…

A group of Watertown dog lovers has started an effort to bring a dog park to town, but one of the questions is where would it go.
The Watertown Dog Park Task Force met for the first time Wednesday. The group of residents hopes to build a place to take their pooches and let them run and play. The town is not overflowing with open space, and many of the public parks are not that large Filippello Park and Arsenal Park have some of the larger fields in town. Most of the rest of the parks are no bigger than a soccer field. Also, dog parks can have a hefty price tag. Arlington's Thorndike Dog Park cost $200,000, and organizers held a fundraiser to offset the cost. The Peters Dog Park in Boston's South End cost $300,000, and supporters raised more than $130,000 for the project. Newton has six off-leash areas, but users need to buy a permit - $50 for Newton residents, $100 …

I think there is plenty of space there, the park is quite large, chess table could go anywhere maybe near the spray park even? The Grove street end would be a great spot for the dog park, as it's somewhat segregated from the rest of the park. Does Watertown have any 'dog friendly' parks, not necessarily off-leash, I have never been able to get a real answer. Other than a few parks tha …   more ›
