Best Apple Pie? - See Who Won the Faire on the Square Baking Contest

The judges have eaten, and picked their favorite pies entered in Watertown's annual baking contest.

The following information was provided by the Faire on the Square organizers: You may ask, what happened at this year’s annual Faire on the Square Best Apple Pie Baker Contest? Well, here is the big wooden spoon scoop … The contest was held Saturday, September 22nd in the Town Hall. The event was graciously hosted by Ms. Irene Frain and Ms. Ingrid Marchesano. The esteemed judges were: Veterans Randy Kenny; Dominic Rice and a resident judge. Nine bakers entered this year’s contest with their prized-recipe apple pies. Some pies arrived to the event hot – just out of the oven. The bakers names were not included on the pies to insure impartiality of the judges. PHOTOS: Thousands Flock to Watertown for the 2012 Faire on the Square, Including Elizabeth Warren

The Democratic senate candidate joined those who gathered in Watertown Square for the annual town celebration.

Drizzly skys gave way to a warm sunny fall afternoon and provided perfect setting for Watertown's annual celebration - the Faire on the Square. Thousands from Watertown and beyond came out to the event, including Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren.  Visitors could enjoy food from dozens of local restaurants, music by Beatlejuice - a Beatles cover band and catch a dance performance. A variety of arts and crafts were available in the parking lot behind the Watertown Free Public Library. Kiddies had their choice of rides - a mini ferris wheel, a carousel or pony rides. The day also provides an opportunity for local organizations, businesses and non-profit groups to let people know what they are all about. Do you have photos …

Saturday's Faire on the Square in Watertown Includes a Visit by Elizabeth Warren

The town's annual gathering near Town Hall features music, entertainment, food and a variety of groups from Watertown.

The 13th annual Faire on the Square comes to Saltonstall Park on Saturday, Sept. 22 , and along with the music, food and fun, senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren plans to make an appearance.  The Faire runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, admission is free. The day features a wide variety of free activities for children and adults including children's rides and activities, music and dance performances. Food and crafts will be sold.  Along with being a place for local groups, businesses and organizations to link with residents, political candidates often stop by. This year, Democrat Elizabeth Warren will make an appearance at 10:45 a.m., according to her campaign. No word if Republican Sen. Scott Brown will be at the event. Among …

Bakers Wanted for Faire on the Square Apple Pie Contest

Break out your favorite apple pie contest and enter the Faire on the Square contest.

The following information was provided by the Faire on the Square: The annual best Apple Pie Contest will take place at this year’s Faire on the Square, Saturday, Sept. 22. Held in the First Floor “Foyer” at Town Hall, judges will choose Watertown’s best apple pie baker. The contest is open to Watertown residents, type of apple used is up to the baker and the winners will be chosen based on best taste and appearance.   Prizes will be announced and awarded at the contest.  Pies must be dropped off by 11 a.m., the morning of the Faire. Judging begins at 11:30 a.m. As in past years, all the pies will be cut up and served to those attending the event.  Best wishes and let the baking begin!

Watertown Faire on the Square Going Ahead, But Needs Donations

The annual event will take place Sept. 22, but money is being sought to offset the cost of the event.

The 2012 Faire on the Square will take place Sept. 22 in the usual spot – behind Town Hall – but the cost of the event has town officials worried. Town Council Vice President Steven Corbett said about $10,000 was raised for last year's Faire, which features games, food and activities. That left the town searching for a way to cover the several thousand dollars shortfall, Corbett said. The Faire on the Square Committee is looking for help recruiting volunteers and soliciting donations. "At one time we had donations of about $30,000," Corbett said. Many of the donations come from local businesses such as banks and car dealerships, Corbett said, but more help is needed. "A combination of economic times and other factors mean that some groups …

Banks Raise Money and Educate at Watertown's Faire on the Square

Belmont Savings Bank raised money for education, while Cambridge Savings Bank had activities to teach lessons in finance.

The following releases were sent out by Belmont Savings and Cambridge Savings banks: Belmont Savings Bank On Sept. 24 at Faire on the Square, Belmont Savings Bank had people lined up to help the Watertown Education Foundation. Belmont Savings Bank had its fun and exciting Cash Cube set up and filled with cash. Faire participants got a chance to get some free cash for themselves and also grab some for the Watertown Public Schools. By the end of the day, $500 had been earmarked for the Foundation.   Belmont Savings Bank Chief Operating Officer, Hal Tovin, was delighted to present the check to Amy Donohue, Board Member of Watertown Education Foundation. Top Bakers Selected in Faire on the Square Apple Pie Contest

The three winners were chosen by a panel of judges at the annual Faire.

The Faire on the Square organizer sent out the following announcement: Wondering what happened at this year’s annual Faire on the Square Best Apple Pie Baker Contest, held on Sept. 24 in Town Hall? The event was emceed by Retired Veterans’ Service Officer, Bob Erickson, assisted by the hostess-of-the-mostest, Irene Frain and the esteemed judges were: Mary B. Ryan of Bromfield Street, Peggy Anderson of York Avenue and representing the U.S. Marine Corps, Veteran Randy Kenny of Morrison Road. Week in Review: Sept. 24 to Oct. 1

Bullet found at the high school, Chipotle coming to Watertown.

Hundreds of people attended last weekend's Faire on the Square, which included rides, food, games, crafts and more. Sections of copper downspouts were stolen off two buildings in Watertown this week, including the Commander's Mansion and Arsenal on the Charles. The downspouts are valued at several thousand dollars. On Thursday, a bullet was found at Watertown High School, prompting officials and police to search students, their belongings and the school. No other bullets or weapons were found. In business news, Chipotle Mexican Grill is coming to the Arsenal Mall this month. The restaurant is slated to open on Oct. 11. Also this week, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown spoke at the Watertown Belmont Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Hundreds Attend Watertown's Faire on the Square

Watertown's annual outdoor festival, Faire on the Square, was held Sept. 24.

Sitting in her booth at the Faire on the Square this weekend, Nancy Smith was surrounded by dozens of handmade animals, toys, clothes and other "kid things and cat things," as she likes to call them. A craftsperson from Billerica, Smith has shown her handmade wares for 10 years at Watertown's annual faire. "Today there are a lot of attractions for kids," she said. "There aren't as many booths with handmade crafts (as in the past). And, with the economy, people have to judge if they can afford things." Still, Smith, who attends about 15 fairs each year, said she has done alright, and thinks the Faire on the Square provides plenty of attractions for everyone — whether it's a hand-knit fishing toy with wooden handle for cats or the latest …
