OP-ED: This Holiday Season Help Keep Alcohol Out Of Teens’ Hands

Watertown officials urge parents to keep an eye on their teens over the holidays to make sure they do not drink alcohol.

With the holiday season upon us once again, as we prepare for joyful celebrations with family and friends, the Watertown Youth Coalition (WYC), Wayside Multi-Center, and the Watertown Police and Public Schools, would like to remind all adults in the community to help prevent teens from drinking alcohol. Teen alcohol use can lead to unsafe behaviors that put their health and safety at-risk. Underage drinking affects everyone in the community and if we work together we can continue to ensure the healthy and safe development of our youth. After all, every year a teen does not use alcohol, the odds of lifelong dependence decreases by 15 percent. Celebrate the Festival of Lights in and around Watertown with fun events.

This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8, and ends a week later on Sunday, Dec. 16. NSTAR Offers Safety Tips for Holiday Decorations

Residents are encouraged to be safe when decorating their homes for the holiday season.

In an effort to help residents across the Commonwealth remain safe during the holiday season, NSTAR released a list of safety tips regarding the use of home decorations.  “Holiday lights have become much more efficient than the older-style bulbs of years past,” said Bill Stack, NSTAR’s energy efficiency spokesman in a statement Wednesday. “With newer technology now available in many more options, today’s lighting displays can help a family save money and energy this holiday season.” Holiday lights using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) use 90 percent less energy than traditional bulbs, according to NSTAR, and they’re much more durable and can last years longer. Watertown Square Lights Up with Holiday Spirit

The first annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony featured a tree decorated for the season and a visit from Santa Claus.

  In the middle of the rush hour buzz in Watertown Square, the holiday spirit suddenly shone through Thursday evening when a tree decorated for the Holidays illuminated with colorful lights.  The tree lighting ceremony sponsored by the Watertown Belmont Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Watertown was the first of what could become an annual tradition in town.  Dozens of children and their parents were joined by town officials and local business owners for the ceremony.  Before the lights went on, a special guest showed up on a Watertown Fire engine. Stores in Watertown Opening Earlier for Black Friday Shoppers This Year

Find out when the stores will open on Black Friday so you can take advantage of the deals.

Watertown's stores and malls will open even earlier than last year on Black Friday so shoppers can have more time to hit the sales. Some stores in town will open in the wee hours of Friday to welcome shoppers. The Arsenal Mall opens its doors at 12:30 a.m. on Black Friday, and Best Buy and Target, at the Watertown Mall, open at 1 a.m.  The Watertown Mall opens at 7 a.m., an hour and a half ealier than normal. Carter's, located at the mall, opens at 6 a.m. The Arsenal mall includes a Gap Outlet, an Old Navy Outlet, Sports Authority and Forever 21 stores, all of which will open at 12:30 a.m. Marshalls, which is also in the mall, opens at 7 a.m. Shops are opening earlier than last year.
