On the day that many gathered in Watertown to celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., a Boston civic leader said people should think more broadly than civil rights and fight for human rights. Robert Lewis Jr., the vice president for program at the Boston Foundation, said Lewis said he was delighted to be able to speak to a room full of people celebrating King. Eleven years ago, some citizens in Watertown wanted to see a human-rights commission for the town – so they started their own.
Many cities and towns in Massachusetts have human-rights commissions as part of their local governments. There's even a statewide organization for them, the Massachusetts Association of Human Rights and Relations Commissions. But Watertown is not among them. "When we wanted the town to create one, some town officials were uncomfortable about it," said Larry Raskin, a Watertown resident and organizational consultant with the U.S. Department of Transportation.
