OP-ED: iPads are Becoming a Common Sight in Classrooms - Is That a Good Thing?

Watertown's Liam Walsh shares his experience at Boston College High School, where students are being required to have tablet computers.

  Now, more than ever, schools are beginning to make the switch from paperback books to glass screens, yellow pencils to rubber styluses. As a student who is in the midst of this technological turmoil, I would like to shed light on this increasingly relevant topic. My high school, Boston College High School, just this year mandated that all sophomores and below were required to have an iPad for class. However, they condoned and even encouraged iPad usage, along with other tablets, for upperclassmen. And my school is not the only one. Even the Watertown school system has begun to make the switch, with the introduction of iPad carts and personalized emails sponsored by Google. TELL US: Should the District Buy Watertown High Students iPads to Use in Class?

Seven classes at Watertown High School are using iPads in a pilot program to find out how technology can be best used in the classroom.

  A few Watertown High School students have a new tool to use in the classroom, one which many of the use outside of the classroom – iPads. The high school bought 30 iPads for a pilot program to see how they can be used in the classroom setting, said WHS Head Master Steve Watson. “There has been a big push for one-to-one technology access in schools, especially in secondary schools,” Watson said. “We thought it is worth exploring and see in what way to implement it.” Several teachers applied to get access to the 30 iPads, and they were chosen from different subjects. In English, they can use the tablets for research and to improve writing and organization skills, said Toni Carlson, a teacher at the high school who is working on the pilot …

Will they be able to get their textbooks on electronically? If so then would the costs be offset buy NOT buying textbooks? My only issue would be them turning into distractions instead of learning tools, Angry Birds during math class anyone? They would have to have them locked down to only run certain apps and such, and who pays for broken ones?   more ›
