Watertown Hockey Squads Skate into State Tourney

Girls' team earns first ever tourney berth, boys get a No. 13 seed.

The Watertown boys' and girls' ice hockey teams will be in the hunt to skate at the TD Garden in Boston as the Raiders were included in the state tournament brackets announced by MIAA officials on Saturday. The Watertown/Melrose girls' hockey team skated to its first MIAA tournament bid in style, earning a No. 10 seed in the Div. 1 tournament. They will host Framingham on at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Ryan Arena. The Raiders, coached by Steve Russo, finished 14-3-4, and placed third in the Middlesex League. The team enters the tournament on a five game winning streak. The boys' team will play Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against No. 20 Stoneham in Woburn. Watertown Field Hockey Looks for TItle No. 11

The Red Raiders enter the playoffs 18-0 and seek back-to-back state titles.

The numbers for the Watertown girl's field hockey team under coach Eileen Donahue have been impressive. In 25 years, the Red Raiders have won 10 state championships and are currently defending champs from 2009. When the MIAA brackets came out this week it probably came as no surprise to anyone to see Watertown as No. 1 in the Div. 2 North playoff picture. The Red Raiders finished the season a perfect 18-0 and will have to wait until Friday to play Winchester, which beat Pentucket in the first round. As members of the Middlesex League the teams are familiar foes. Watertown won both meetings this year, 3-0 at Winchester in September and 1-0 at Victory Field in October.
