Field Hockey Team Just One Success This Fall for Watertown High School's Sports Program

The field hockey squad received its due from the School Committee this week, but other teams also enjoyed success this fall.

Watertown High School’s field hockey team is on quite a roll, finishing an undefeated season and clinching its fourth straight state title and extended its unbeaten streak to 92 games. Athletic Director Michael Lahiff told the School Committee that the team is just one of the bright spots for the WHS sports program this fall. On Tuesday, the School Committee recognized the players and coaches of the Raiders field hockey squad for their latest title, handing all members a certificate. While the field hockey titles seem to be routine, Lahiff said this is not typical for most communities. “These things don’t just happen,” Lahiff said. “Three straight titles is great, but back to back to back to back is even better.” Field hockey coach Eileen …

Winning State Title Keeps Watertown Field Hockey's Streak, Team Approaching State Record

The Raiders sit just behind Walpole for the all-time Massachusetts high school field hockey unbeaten streak.

Saturday's victory in the MIAA Div. 2 field hockey state final gave Watertown its fourth straight championship and completing another unbeaten season, moving Watertown just one win or tie behind the longest unbeaten streak in Massachusetts high school field hockey. Walpole owns the longest streak, at 93, but Watertown's 1-0 win over Oakmont in the state final give the Raiders 92 straight wins or ties - they went 90-0-2. The streak also ranks among the longest in the nation. The Raiders tied Darien, Conn., for the fourth longest streak nationally, according to TopoftheCircle.com. The longest ever is Vorhee's Eastern, N.J., at 153. Heading into the 2012 season, many thought this was the year that Watertown field hockey team's unbeaten …

Watertown Downs Oakmont to Claim its Fourth Straight Field Hockey State Title

The Raiders scored early in the game and held on to defeat Oakmont for the second straight year in the MIAA Div. 2 championship game.

A young Raiders team peaked at the right time, defeating Oakmont 1-0 on Saturday and Watertown collected a fourth straight MIAA Div. 2 State Field Hockey championship. Watertown sophomore Emily Loprete provided all the offense that the Raiders would need in the rematch of last year's state final with a goal less than 8 minutes into the game.  "I got a tip on it. It was a pass from Lauren (Sutherland), a hard shot," Lopete said. "It really helped (the team). It was key because it was in the beginning (of the game), so it felt very good." While the Raiders kept the Spartans off the board, it was not easy. Oakmont had a couple good scoring chances at the end of the first half. "It was nice we were able to hold that off," Donohue said. "Our …

Watertown Eases Past Apponequet and Into the Field Hockey State Final

The Raiders struck early, and controlled play during most of the state semifinal Wednesday evening in Reading.

Watertown got on the board early and kept rolling during Wednesday night's MIAA Div. 2 field hockey state semifinal against Apponequet, earning the Raiders another trip to Worcester to play for the team's fourth straight state title. Raiders field hockey coach Eileen Donohue said the team made the adjustments they needed to improve after Monday's section final against Manchester-Essex. "We felt needed to play a little better and were a little more confident out on the field," Donohue said. "In one day we prepared for (Apponequet) and it paid off - (practicing Tuesday) out in that freezing rain." Sophomore Emily Loprete led the scoring for Watertown (22-0), tallying just three minutes into the game and once again just minutes into the …

Watertown Takes Down Manchester-Essex to Win the Field Hockey North Section Title

The Raiders got a goal in each half to defeat Manchester-Essex in the North Section final.

In a scene that has become familiar in the field hockey world, Watertown High School claimed another MIAA Div. 2 North Section trophy, Monday. With the 2-0 win over Manchester-Essex, the Raiders won the school's 20th section title. Watertown coach Eileen Donohue said she was pleased her team came away with the win. "I am happy with the end result. This type of game, I am just glad we won," Donohue said. "We had to adjust to the way they played. We worked the ball around well, but it is just a matter of finishing a little more." Watertown got a goal in each half, and controlled the play much of the section final at North Andover High School. Senior Alyssa Carlson scored the first goal with 8 minutes left in the first half when she bit a …
