Watertown Girls' Basketball Team Runs into Roadblock in Lowell

Pentucket halted the Raiders' state tournament run in the North Section final on Saturday.

  Pentucket threw up a roadblock in the way of Watertown's run in the MIAA Div. 3 North Section tournament Saturday when they ended the Raiders' season with a 38-24 win at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. Top-seeded Pentucket (24-1) came out punching when sophomore Kelsi McNamara hit a three pointer, and 11th-seeded Watertown (13-11) answered with a two-point bucket by sophomore Rachel Campbell. After that, however, the Raiders hit a cold streak, not scoring for the rest of the first quarter. Pentucket led 14-2. "We had moments, we had spurts, but I think we are still a young team in some ways," said Watertown Coach Patrick Ferdinand. Watertown Upsets St. Mary's in the Girls' Basketball Tournament

The Raiders took down the second seeded team and will play Saturday in the section final.

[Updated March 7 at 10 a.m.] Clutch shooting down the stretch propelled the Raiders past girls' basketball power St. Mary's of Lynn Tuesday night and into the North Section finals of the MIAA Div. 3 tournament. Watertown (13-10) came in as the 11th seed, but defeated girls' basketball second seeded St. Mary's (21-3) 61-60 at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in the section semifinal. The Spartans won the state title two years ago. Watertown Coach Patrick Ferdinand told the Lynn Daily Item that his team did not back down against the odds.  "Nobody gave us that much of a chance, I heard, against this team, but we came out with heart. Watertown Girl's Hoops Takes Down Amesbury, Heading to Section Semis

The Raiders won their home game and will take on St. Mary's in the next round.

Watertown High School won a battle of Cinderella teams and kept their tale going for at least one more round of the MIAA Div. 3 North Section girls' basketball tournament. The Raiders (12-10) beat Amesbury (11-11) 47-32 on Sunday in the WHS Gym in the section quarterfinals. Both squads came into the game after defeating higher seeded opponents in the first round, with 11th seed Watertown beating No. 6 Hamilton-Wenham and 14th seed Amesbury defeating No. 3 seed Excel. Now Watertown, faces second seeded St. Mary's of Lynn (20-2) in the section semifinal. The game is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Mystic Valley in Malden.

Watertown Falls to Top Seed in the Boys' Basketball Tournament

Undefeated North Reading ended the Raiders' season Saturday night.

Watertown High School's hopes for a run in the boys' basketball state tourney run ended Saturday when the Raiders ran into top-seeded North Reading. The undefeated Hornets beat Watertown 57-40 in the Div. 3 North Section quarterfinals. North Reading, (21-0) got 22 points from senior forward John Mastascusa who also had 10 rebounds. and 6 blocks. Senior Tom Hogan added 17 points, according to a report on Boston.com. The Hornets were ranked 10th in the region by the Boston Globe. The Raiders, the eighth seed, finishes the season with a record of 13-9. Watertown defeated Northeast Regional 80-57 in the first round of the tournament.

Watertown Boys' Basketball Team Victorious in First Round of State Tourney

The Raiders defeated Northeast Regional to set up a showdown with top seeded North Reading.

Watertown's boys' basketball team came in with an equal record as their first round opponent in the state tournament - Northeast Regional - and as a lower seed, but the Raiders showed they which team was best by routing the hosts. Kevin Ditietrantonio scored 19 points for the Raiders and PJ Hairson added another 17 points in Watertown's 80-53 win Wednesday night in Wakefield, according to a report on Boston.com. Next up for Watertown is North Reading, the undefeated and top seeded team in the North Section Div. 3 tournament. The Raiders play the section quarterfinal at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, at North Reading.

Raiders Boys and Girls Hoops Teams Heading to the Postseason

Both squads from Watertown earned spots in the state tournament.

Watertown High School has a pair of state tournament teams, as both the boys and girls basketball teams were selected by the MIAA to play in the Div. 3 North Section tournament. The boys' head to Wakefield to face Northeast Metro Regional High School on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. Coach Steve Harrington's squad finished the regular season with a record of 12-8. They earned the ninth seed and face number 8 seeded Northeast Regional, which also had a 12-8 record. The winner plays North Reading, the top seed in the North Section with a perfect 20-0 record. The Raiders' girls' team faces Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. WHS got into the tournament with a run of wins at the end of the season. Watertown finished 10-10 under coach …
