Watertown residents may soon be able to get an extra recycling toter, but it will cost them.
Additional recycling toters could soon be available for Watertown residents, but it will cost $180, said Watertown Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee. Since the new recycling program started in August 2012 some residents have complained that the 64-gallon recycling barrels - collected every two weeks - is not enough for all their recyclables. At the Town Council's Fiscal 2014 Budget hearing on Tuesday, Mee said that he thinks additional toters should be sold. "I recommend we sell the toters to residents for $180," Mee said. "That includes distribution and tipping fee for the rest of the contract." The contract lasts for five years, ending in April 2017, and Mee said residents may have to pay another fee for the new contract. Residents…

The Conservation Commission has started talking about how the land where the recycling center now sits will be used after it moves.
Watertown has a rare opportunity to add something new to one of the largest recreation areas in town, and town officials want residents to share their ideas for what to put in area near the entrance to Filippello Park. Currently, there are basketball courts in the spot and the recycling center operates in the area, but that will soon move to Stanley Avenue on the West End of Watertown. With the space freeing up, the Conservation Commission and the Recreation Department seek ideas for how to use the property, which sits along the driveway into Filippello Park off Grove Street, said Watertown's Director of Recreation Peter Centola. "It's a matter of what the Conservation Commission recommends, what fits and what makes sense," Centola said. "…

The proposal calls for the center to move from Filippello Park to Stanley Avenue.
For years, town officials have searched for a new spot for the Watertown Recycling Center, and now they may have found the right locale. Tuesday night, Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee told the Town Council about the proposal to move the center to 76 Stanley Avenue, on the West End of town, near the Jewish Community Day School. Residents visiting the site will come into the new center from Green River Way, drop off the items and exit onto Stanley Avenue. "We want to make it more safe, much more efficient and much more effective," Mee said. One change will be to place the yard waste on the ground, Mee said. "One of the biggest complaints we get is people have to lift yard waste up to put it in the dumpster," Mee said. "There will be …

The Conservation commissioners have pressed the town for years to move the facility off town park land, and tonight the Town Council will see the proposed design of a new center.
After many years, Watertown's Recycling Center may move off of land at Filippello Park. The Town Council will hear a presentation about a proposed new facility next to the Schick House, which sits nearby on the other side of Grove Street from the current location. The proposal has containers to recycle a number of items, including glass, cardboard and steel. Cars would enter one end, drive along a "U" and come out on the other end. The fact that the current recycling center still sits on the basketball courts on the Grove Street side of Filippello Park has been a sticking point for another Watertown board — the Conservation Commission. Half the funds for the project that turned the town dump into one of the town's largest parks came from …

The move would only be a temporary one, but the town has been told by federal and state officials it must move off the site at Filippello Park.
The future of Watertown’s recycling center remains unsettled, but its days on the basketball courts at Filippello Park appear to be numbered. Town Councilors voted Tuesday night to have consultants evaluate whether the Shick House property, which sits off Grove Street near the current site. They tabled, however, votes to require the current center be closed by April 1, 2012. The Shick House land could be used free of charge, but it would only be a temporary location. The town was granted use of it for 10 years by the Mount Auburn Cemetery, but eventually it will be turned into burial plots. Town Council Vice President Steve Corbett said he does not like the idea of moving to the Shick House. “I am very leery of moving to a temporary …
