Hecht: Brownsberger Got His Supporters Out, Won State Senate Election [Video]

The Watertown State Representative said he got the numbers he wanted, but Belmont's 30 percent turnout made the difference.

After a short, but intense campaign, Watertown State Rep. Jonathan Hecht said he was happy with his vote totals, but the larger-than-expected turnout in Belmont carried Belmont State Rep. Will Brownsberger to victory. Brownsberger won the Democratic primary in the special election to fill Steven Tolman's Second Suffolk and Middlesex State Senate seat with with a total of 4,958 (35.5 percent) The district covers all of Watertown, Belmont, and parts of Cambridge and Boston. Hecht finished second with 3,899 (26 percent), followed by former state firefighters union president Bob McCarthy of Watertown, who had 3,436 votes (22 percent), and Brighton attorney Tim Schofield garnered 2,887 votes (19 percent). Belmont's Brownsberger Wins Primary for State Senate, Hecht finishes Second

Turnout in Belmont favored the Belmont State Representative.

Before a joyous crowd of campaign workers, friends and Belmont residents, State Rep. Will Brownsberger declared victory in the Special State Senate Primary in an emotional speech 35 minutes after the polls closed on Tuesday, Dec. 13.  "I will be working for you," said Brownsberger who seconds before entered the crowded Trapelo Road headquarters supporters cheering, "We won!" Updated at 5:55 p.m. Voters have been trickling in to Watertown polling stations today to select the town's next state senator. Polls are open until 8 p.m. The Special Primary Election features four Democrats seeking to repace Steven Tolman, who left the Senate to become the president of the AFL-CIO of Massachusetts union. The candidates are Watertown State Rep. Jonathan Hecht, former state firefighters union president Bob McCarthy of Watertown, Belmont State Rep. Will Brownsberger and Brighton attorney Tim Schofield. Hecht, Brownsberger Pick Up Newspaper Endorsements in the State Senate Race

The Boston Globe and Boston Herald backed Belmont State Rep. Will Brownsberger and Watertown's Jonathan Hecht got the nod from the Cambridge Chronicle.

Belmont State Rep. Will Brownsberger received endorsements from the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald in the race for the Second Suffolk and Middlesex State Senate seat, while Watertown State Rep. Jonathan Hecht received the blessing of the Cambridge Chronicle. The election to replace Steven Tolman in the senate will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13, and the district includes Watertown, Belmont, parts of Cambridge and Boston (inlcuding Brighton, Allston, the Fenway and the Back Bay). The Globe said Brownsberger "has a progressive record on social and environmental matters - but also a history of creative thinking about making government more effective, honest, and transparent."
